Puck and the six drawers
Privacy at Puck
Puck and the six drawers is an app that goes with Maria de Ridder's books about AnnaMaria and Puck. This page tells you what happens to your data when you use Puck or ask for access. What is not here is in our platform's privacy policy, which applies to Puck as well.
Who we are
Puck runs on the MindfulnessInc platform, part of Buddha in the Boardroom, the Dutch sole proprietorship of Koen van den Biggelaar (Chamber of Commerce 96493798). We are responsible for your data. Maria de Ridder wrote the books, and decides together with Koen who is given an account.
Who Puck is for
Puck is for adults who work with or care for children. An account is only for people aged 18 or over. Do not make one for a child. You never need a child's name.
What stays on your phone
- What you fill in in the drawers without talking with Puck stays on your phone: your thoughts, your answers and what you keep in the purple drawer. It does not come to us. The drawers need no account and no internet.
- Your phone also holds a copy of your conversations with Puck, who you are to the child (if you fill it in) and what you have kept. Signing out leaves all of this there.
- What Puck keeps on your phone is left out of backups to iCloud or to your computer. On a new phone you start with an empty cabinet.
When you talk with Puck
- When you talk with Puck, what you write goes to our platform. There Puck keeps the conversation for 90 days. After that it is erased by itself.
- Every message carries: who you are to the child, if you filled it in; the thought it is about (the picture and the word you put with it); the drawer; the language of the app; and the country, if your phone is set to the Netherlands or Belgium. That way Puck knows, for example, which holidays are coming.
- Every new conversation also carries what you have kept in purple.
- To answer, our platform sends the conversation to Anthropic, which provides the language model. When Puck looks something up, for example to check a fact, the search goes through Anthropic's search service.
- Puck is not a helpline. If something in a conversation gives cause for worry, Puck names in the conversation where you can turn, such as a helpline. That stays in the conversation: neither Puck nor we alert anyone else.
Who processes your data for us
- Amazon Web Services in Frankfurt (Germany): our platform, storage, sign-in and the emails we send.
- Anthropic in the United States: the language model that writes Puck's replies, and the search service. Anthropic does not use this data to train its models and keeps it only for a limited period.
- Apple, if you put Puck on your iPhone through TestFlight.
- Microsoft for our email, and for the requests emailed to Koen and Maria.
Transfers to the United States are covered by the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses and, where the provider is certified, the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.
Your request and your account
- You request an account on this site. You fill in your name, your email address, who you are to the children, and a note if you like. This is stored on our platform and emailed to Koen and Maria. They read every request themselves and approve or decline it.
- If you are given access, we make an account on your email address and you receive an email with a temporary password. Your request then belongs to your account.
- If you are not given access, your name, your email address and your note are erased from the request. We do not email you.
- After the decision, a code derived from your email address stays for 90 days, so the same request does not keep reaching Koen and Maria.
- Sign-in is handled by Amazon Cognito. We never see your password.
Face ID
If you choose to sign in with Face ID (or Touch ID, or your fingerprint), your session stays on your phone, behind Face ID. Your password is never kept on your phone. Your face or fingerprint never reaches us: your phone handles that itself. You can also lock the app. That lock lives on your phone only.
Erasing
What is on your phone and what Puck keeps on our platform are erased separately in the app.
- On your phone: under Account, with "Erase what is on this device". That erases your cabinet, including who you are to the child and what you have kept, and the copy of your conversations with Puck. Face ID for Puck and the lock are switched off as well. To erase only who you are to the child and what you have kept, use "Let Puck forget all of this" in Your cabinet.
- On our platform: under Account, at "Forget me on Puck". That erases your conversations with Puck, your profile there and your access. At "Delete account" you also remove your login. This does not erase what is on your phone.
- Under Account you can also download what we keep about you.
Your rights and contact
You have the right to see your data, to have it corrected or erased, and to object. Much of this you can do yourself in the app. For anything else, and for questions, write to koen@mindfulnessinc.org. We answer within one month. If you are not satisfied with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
